Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Champion High School's Winter Formal dance

January 28, 2022

Champion High School will be hosting its annual Winter Formal Dance Saturday, January 29, at the La Cantera Resort. COVID-19 took this annual event away for the 2020-2021 school year and Student Council (STUCO) is eager to bring a Winter Wonderland to their peers.
“STUCO has every member working towards the end goal of a successful dance,” said Student Council President Amber Frantz, senior. “We divide up into different committees. For example: decorations, ticket sales, music, etc.”
Student Council consists of a group of elected juniors and seniors who work together to organize events for the student body such as homecoming week activities, football games themes, tailgates, senior sunset, and t-shirts for games against our rival. Lots of work and planning go into creating a school dance that many may not even consider like figuring out where to host the dance in the first place.
“For this year’s winter formal, we wanted a location that was not necessarily centered in Boerne but was still easily accessible,” said Frantz. “La Cantera checked all the boxes in terms of a large enough ballroom, contract agreements, and a new location that was exciting.”
Students from every grade level were invited to purchase their tickets for $40 before school or online the week of January 17-21. Even with the online option, many students waited in line for tickets. All tickets were sold in one week, when they originally planned to sell them in two. With the online and in-person ticket sales, STUCO believes the venue will be full.
Prior to the start of ticket sales, Frantz said STUCO is “printing 600 tickets and do expect to sell out due to our past track record. We will also not be selling at the door.”
In under a week, the dance sold out, indicating a large turnout. The middle of the dance floor is popular for students, but injuries are common.
“My one tip, especially for girls, would be to bring comfortable shoes to change into to avoid broken or bruised feet — speaking from personal experience,” said Frantz.
Those who purchased tickets can begin arriving at the event at 7 p.m. A student ID and ticket QR code will be required at the doors before entering the event.
“Winter formal is truly an integration of both underclassmen and upperclassmen, allowing students to interact with all their friends, regardless of grade,” said Frantz. “This dance — from a senior’s perspective — is one last chance to make high school memories. So for freshmen and sophomores, don’t take this for granted.”
