DC Studios, a film and television company owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, tasked with converting stories from DC Comics to films, shows, and games, gained new leadership when James Gunn and Peter Safran became co-chairmen for the company in 2022. Since then, seven movies and eight shows have been announced for the DC Universe, which is a reboot of the DC Extended Universe, both cinematic universes focusing on DC Comics characters.
An announcement video for the first storyline of the DCU, ‘Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,’ was released January 31, 2023, which featured Gunn revealing five films and five shows. The films announced were ‘Superman: Legacy,’ later retitled ‘Superman,’ ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ ‘The Authority,’ ‘The Brave and The Bold,’ and ‘Swamp Thing.’ The shows were ‘Creature Commandos,’ released Dec 2024, ‘Lanterns,’ ‘Waller,’ ‘Paradise Lost,’ and ‘Booster Gold.’
All of the projects announced at the time did not have a finished script and thus had not been greenlit for production, except for ‘Creature Commandos,’ which already had the scripts for all seven episodes. However, ‘Superman’ was the only project which kept its initial release date, releasing July 11, 2025. ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ has a release date of June 26, 2026, and ‘Lanterns,’ a reboot to the Green Lantern franchise, started filming February 2025 in Los Angeles. The rest of the films and shows announced in the video haven’t been greenlit because no script has been finished.
‘The Brave and the Bold’ is a Batman and Robin reboot that adapts the Grant Morrison comic run, which introduced Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, who became the fifth Robin. The film director is Andy Muschietti, who previously directed ‘The Flash,’ which was a box office failure. The film’s story is up in the air as there is no finished script yet.
‘Waller’ was originally supposed to release in 2024, but was delayed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. It follows Amanda Waller, who was a central character in ‘The Suicide Squad,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ and ‘Creature Commandos.’ ‘Peacemaker’ is getting a second season in this new universe after ‘Superman,’ regardless of the first season being set in the DC Extended Universe. ‘Waller’ is to be released after the second season of ‘Peacemaker,’ with no recent updates on it.
Two films and two animated series have been announced in 2024 for the DC Universe. ‘Clayface,’ a horror film directed by James Watkins, based on the Batman supervillain with the same name, both Clayface and Batman debuted in ‘Creature Commandos.’ Since the script was finished in December 2024, the film is to release September 11, 2026.
‘Teen Titans,’ a live-action film based on the Teen Titans comics, has a script written by Ana Nogueira, who also wrote ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.’ ‘Krypto’ is an animated series of shorts that follows Superman’s dog, Krypto. ‘Blue Beetle’ is an animated continuation of the ‘Blue Beetle’ movie, also set in the DCEU. Xolo Mariduena, the actor who played Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle in the film, is set to reprise the role for the series.
The fate of the DCU will be based on the success of ‘Superman,’ because if it fails, then the announced films with no release date may get canceled and DC might never recover.
