Every quarter, teachers nominate a student that they feel exemplifies the characteristics of the Champion Way — trustworthiness, adaptability, initiative, courage, optimism, contemplation, perseverance, compassion, loyalty, honesty, respect, and responsibility. These are the students that received the award, as well as an excerpt of what each teacher had to say about them. Recipients are sorted alphabetically by teacher.

 

Jeffring Amador-Huete

 

“I have a young man who moved here from Nicaragua this past fall. We immediately started to visit regularly after I showed him pictures of several of my trips to Nicaragua with my family. A connection with this student was made! He tried very hard in class every day despite our language differences. Our agreement was that I will teach him a little math, and he will teach me to speak Spanish better. I am honored to be able to teach this young man math here at Champion High School. I nominate Jeffring Amador-Huete for the Champion Way Award!” -Chris Adamek

“When I thought about who I’d like to nominate for the Champion Way Award, this student came to mind. She displays a level of maturity well beyond her years. First of all, she has such a kind and caring attitude. She listens to others in a way that makes them feel that she honestly cares about their well-being. She never makes anyone feel that she is more important than they are. In addition to her gift of compassion, she is driven academically to achieve at a high level. Since the beginning of this school year, I have been honored to know her, and now I am honored to nominate Lola Ellis for the Champion Way Award.” -Janet Briggs

“I have watched this particular young man demonstrate adaptability when he moved into our Boerne Community and entering the AV pathway later than his peers. Yet, he has shown perseverance by quickly learning the programs and cameras. I have watched him grow in courage through learning new skills and building relationships with his peers in the video production pathway. He is a great collaborator and team player. He is always hard working and often initiates/volunteers for film projects even if they are after hours (or in the sweltering heat of day). He shows responsibility and reliability with expensive equipment and important jobs. Since day one, he has shown utmost respect towards me and others. The best part of this young man is how he makes me, and his practicum class laugh daily with his funny commentary and physical antics. “This young man came to my room at the beginning of the school year with a positive attitude and a contagious smile. “I have a young man in my class that is the definition of compassion and courage. He is always the first one to raise his hand and volunteer during our Charger Chats. He is willing and vulnerable with sharing his thoughts and answering questions when called upon. He is an active participant in class discussions. When he doesn’t understand some of the material in economics, he always asks for clarification and shows initiative in all his assignments. This young man brings a unique perspective to class and is always helpful in group projects. He is respectful not only to me, as his teacher, but also to his classmates. “When I think of the characteristics that make up the Champion’s Way Award, it is very important to me to express how much I appreciate having this particular young man in my English class this year. Students like him make it worth teaching everyday! This young man is a diligent, dedicated student. To say he tries his best is an understatement. He has a rare, intrinsic drive to complete every assignment, essay, or project to the best of his ability. He also displays a refreshing integrity when it comes to academics; he truly wants to do the work and wants to make the most out of his education. He energizes me to create meaningful lessons and rise to the level of the brightest minds in the class. In addition to intellect, he brings creativity to his academic pursuits. “I have a young lady in my class that not only works hard on tangible successes (diligent in her academics, accomplished in her extracurriculars), but she is a person who is authentic in those characteristics that are not measurable. I see in her an honest compassion towards other students, she is a realistic optimist, encourages responsibility (while modeling it in herself), is honest in her opinions and ideas (while being respectful to those who may differ), and does so with a positive attitude and cheerful disposition. She never comes into the classroom without a smile and never leaves without a pleasant “thank you.” She displays a strong sense of self-worth, optimism, hope, and resiliency that is the foundation of a student-leader. She works energetically to complete challenging and enriching assignments. I have known her for a few years, and it is great to see how she is growing so much as a student. This student is kind, friendly, and welcoming to everyone he encounters – even his younger sister who likes to visit with him before class starts! He works hard and is dedicated to his studies; no matter the subject we are covering, he approaches it with enthusiasm and an open mind. He is a powerful force on the football field as well as in the classroom, and I know that he is appreciated by everyone for his leadership, respect, and easy-going personality. Diana Monroy

“I have had the pleasure of teaching this student for the past 2 years. First IPC and now Chemistry. She is also a student aide in my IPC class. She is a hard worker, trustworthy and a great role model to her peers. Most importantly, she has an amazing heart! When she has work of her own to complete, she is still willing to stop and help others. Last year, she was very nervous taking Chemistry. However, she stepped outside of her comfort zone and decided to take on the challenge. Chemistry is not an easy class, and it’s been an absolute privilege watching her as she grows, takes on challenges, and overcomes them. I know that she can do anything that she sets her mind too. I am so proud of this student, and I hope that she understands that she should be very proud of herself. This young lady has a bright future ahead and I am so happy that I get a chance to nominate her for this well-deserved award. “I have a young lady that exemplifies the Champion Way award through her ability to be adaptable, courageous and responsible. My student is in AP Environmental this year and she is also a member of the Environmental Club. I had the opportunity to get to know her on our first semester camping trip with the Environmental Club. She signed up for the camping trip without knowing anyone and ended up making friends and being incredibly helpful. She is a wonderful, down to earth student that has a bright future ahead of her. “This student took up the challenge of AP World History and has displayed an exceptional amount of grit in sticking with it. I know that the class is a big challenge for him, but he comes in every day laser focused. He asks questions when he needs to and remains steadfast in his mission to be successful. Outside of academics, I coached him in cross country last year and I can see many positive changes that he has made. He has shown courage and perseverance in this process that will help him as he moves on. He is proof of what one can do when they truly persevere without fear of failure. “The student that has impressed me the most this school year is in my College Prep Senior English class, which is a portfolio-based class. This student has worked so hard on his portfolio and has really shown persistence and dedication in his writing samples all year. Before the end of the 1st semester, I was getting constant notifications letting me know that he was editing and improving his own work. He then took my advice and made changes to his work that I recommended. It brings me great joy to see such a tremendous work ethic in a student, knowing that it is that kind of grit that will ultimately make students successful after high school. “One of the most positive kids I know is also just as much fun to be around. I don’t know a football player, Lacrosse player, student, coach or staff member that doesn’t respect this young man due to the positive manner that he carries himself with daily. “Not only is this student prepared for class, gives it his all, is respectful to me and his peers, but he always does it with a smile on his face. He never ceases to encourage those around him or go the extra mile to make the world around him a better place. When NHS sponsored a campus cleanup, this student worked tirelessly to the very end. When everyone else didn’t want to see another trash bag of leaves, he stayed, dug in and worked until the job was complete. He even mentioned how he wanted to come back and clean up the rock beds even more! After seeing him play basketball and how he led his team on the court, I have no doubt that my student exemplifies every aspect of the Champion Way in and out of the classroom.
